10 Games That Mock You for Playing on Easy Mode
Some video games are incredibly difficult. So difficult to the point that sometimes we throw our controllers on the floor in disgust. To add insult to injury, there are some video games that mock you. Whether it's because you died repeatedly, or chose an easier difficulty setting, these games found a way to get under your skin. Although game developers probably used this tactic to encourage gamers to play on a more difficult setting, it can still be demeaning and embarrassing. Here are ten video games that mock you for playing on easy mode.
I spent many of my teenage years huddled around my friend's PlayStation playing Twisted Metal 2. This game bridged the gap between logical gameplay to absurdity. Whenever we'd play against each other, it was an intense battle that would last for hours. But if you've ever played against the computer, you could be in for a frustrating experience.
Lowering the difficulty sometimes can curb your frustration. However, with Twisted Metal 2, if you selected the Easy setting, you can only play one level against one boss. After defeating the boss, a stop sign appears on the screen that says, "No losers allowed beyond this point." Video games are frustrating enough, but getting taunted and being called a loser by one is embarrassing.
The Metal Gear Solid series is very intense and difficult to play. Between the stealthy, sneaking around missions to defeating difficult bosses, Metal Gear Solid always took a while to beat. In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, if you repeatedly fail missions, they make you wear an embarrassing chicken hat.
While it looks embarrassing, wearing the chicken hat does make the game easier. Your health regenerates faster, items are easier to find, and hiding from your enemies is a lot easier. However, once you've had enough of the shame, you can remove the chicken from your head and play on normal mode. Still, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is one of the most infamous video games that mock you. I hope the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie stays faithful to the source material, except for the chicken hat anyway.
Wolfenstein: The New Order
The latest game in the Wolfenstein series takes place after the Nazis won World War II. Wolfenstein has always mocked players for selecting the Easy settings, but this one takes the cake. When selecting the difficulty setting, you'll see a picture of your character depicting each setting. The two easiest options titled, "Don't Hurt Me," and "Can I Play, Daddy?" are just examples of how much they mock you. If you select, "Can I Play, Daddy?" a picture of your character shows him sucking on pacifier. Now that's just degrading.
TimeSplitters 2 was always one of the most entertaining multiplayer shooters. From its imaginative weapons and gameplay to its hint of humor, the way this video game mocks you is odd. If you finish in last place, the game will enable a Monkey Assistant mode which will send out a pack of killer monkeys after the leader. While this may help you out, having the Monkey Assistant mode is just a cheap shot and is just another one of the video games that mock you.
Earthworm Jim was always an interesting game. Between its witty animation and humor, it has always been a little funky. So it's pretty understandable when you select an easier difficulty, you're treated to a horrible, boring monologue about worms. If you play on the Practice mode, your game will eventually be interrupted with a voiceover by game creator Doug TenNapel. TenNapel gives an endless history about worms that'll make you think twice about changing the difficulty.
The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile
This game was released as an Xbox Live Arcade game, which soon became famous for its wacky, gruesome gameplay. If you die repeatedly, an easier difficulty setting called "Pretty Princess Difficulty" becomes available. In this mode, The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile becomes one of the most brutal video games that mock you. When you kill enemies, gushing blood is replaced by rainbows and hearts. If that wasn't embarrassing enough, your Xbox Live account will show that you unlocked the "Pretty Princess Difficulty," so all of your friends can see.
This Nintendo DS arcade game was a brilliant return for the Contraseries, which had long been a staple in arcades since 1987, eventually moving to PlayStation. Selecting the Easy difficulty on Contra 4 comes with its own demeaning qualities. If you play on Easy, you will only be allowed to play seven levels before the game ends. Then, you will not be able to see the end scene of the game, forcing you to play on a more difficult setting.
No one likes to be reminded of all their shortcomings, right? In King's Quest VI, your character will do just that. In the game, you are given two options in which to play. You can either take the long route or the short route, which skips some of the quests and storyline. If you take the short route, your character will remind you of all the missed opportunities and missed adventures you could've had. After a while, it becomes one of the most annoying video games that mock you.
Doom
The Doom series has long been a fan favorite and a pioneer in violent gameplay. The first installment, Doom, includes a variety of difficulty settings, including the embarrassing easy ones called, "Hey, Not So Rough!" and "I'm Too Young to Die." While it may make the game easier to beat, it's still mocking you and encouraging to try something harder.
Although it was well received upon its release, the Spider-Man game for PlayStation becomes pointless on its Kid Mode difficulty. If you play on Kid Mode, you basically don't have to do anything to beat the game. It skips various bosses and missions and controls Spider-Man at times so you can accelerate through the game.
While this may be a genuine attempt to give children an opportunity to play, it's just useless and one of the most embarrassing video games that mock you. I hope Marvel's Spider-Man , set to debut in late 2018, doesn't have this unnecessary feature.
