what to do when ripped off and paid with paypal

Firstly, I haven't sold or posted a cycle for years. Also, I only use Paypal for the occasional eBay purchase. I've never used it to send or receive a 4 figure sum.

On Friday I received a payment of £1100. I immediately withdrew information technology to my electric current account and it said the process tin can take effectually two hours. I idea it might be deadening because of the weekend but information technology'southward at present midday Mon and I no longer take the Monday in my Paypal account and it hasn't landed in my depository financial institution yet either.

I've got the cycle all boxed and set up to go. Bundle Force are collecting information technology tomorrow.

Now, I might just exist getting paranoid. But would you permit the bike get if the coin still isn't in your bodily bank business relationship? Is their anything a buyer tin can do to take the money dorsum or cancel a payment? At present I'chiliad not a scammer so I know the cycle is exactly as described but if the buyer decided otherwise (or pretended to) is there whatsoever way I could exist left without the bike or the money?

If at that place is a dispute then PayPal will arbitrate, you shouldn't exist able to withdraw the money unless they have received the goods otherwise you are in a massive position to scam them.

Not simply that, the classic is 'received not as described'. If you lot're the seller, the buyer tin claim information technology's wonky/shonky/winky and you may exist lucky to become your money and/or continue your bike.

Then yes, if you lot've inadvertently sold to a scammer, PayPal won't necessarily rescue you.

Not just that, the classic is 'received not as described'. If you're the seller, the buyer can merits it'southward wonky/shonky/winky and you lot may exist lucky to get your money and/or go along your wheel.

So yes, if you've inadvertently sold to a scammer, PayPal won't necessarily rescue yous.

Yeah, if you're really lucky & sell a big £500 item that the client signs for, has no recorded impairment & and then 3 days later opens a claim for the whole thing being missing from the box, Paypal then debit your account for the money & refuse to help, despite all the evidence to the reverse every bit they accept signed a grade to say otherwise…

Paypal are corking.

Oh great.

I'm gonna showtime thinking that they have something against me

They do, they were just saying that the other solar day in the 'what conspiracies' meeting… 🙂

I knew it…!

😥

Out of curiosity, did you sell it to somebody from here- if so, I normally get them to stick a postal service on the ad and then I can run into their username/history.

Secondly- you lot've advertised th bicycle for a grand on hither- did you go £1100 for it posted? Cos I'd be a bit wary if somebody offered £100 actress if I would post information technology.

Not a deal breaker, just I'd even retrieve about the possibility of myself/a mate delivering information technology in person if the £100 would cover it.

Advertised for £1200 on Pinkbike. Information technology'southward going to Newcastle. Sold for £1100 so minus fees and parcel force I'll only clear a 1000.

I was going to evangelize information technology for him as an excuse to visit family and he was upward for it but didn't move the coin fast enough. I'd feel much better if the money was visible in my account!

If he's paid via Paypal you lot have to transport information technology with a trackable, recordable service and then you can 'testify' he signed for it.

Otherwise you deliver, he claims not receipt, you can't in any way, shape or form 'testify' he has received it.

Either that, refund him & do cash on delivery.

The but style I would trust the process completely earlier releasing the goods is to transfer the cash out of PayPal and ensure whatsoever funding links cannot be raided to reverse the payment. If you lot're coming together the buyer whatsoever mode, why non cash on collection?

I routinely sell and post stuff for £1000+ I but sold a photographic camera to someone in France who paid me £1650 for it for example.

If the money was in your Paypal account and y'all transfered it to your depository financial institution account, then information technology's non a massive surprise if information technology's not in your current account now. BACS still takes 'up to' three days not including weekends. In many instances it volition be there in seconds, but it is quite common for it to take longer.

If you transferred it and then it's merely in process; you're not being scammed (though at that place is still the potential for this to happen).

In a lot of transactions, Paypal tin can put the money into escrow until the buyer confirms that they've received the item and this can be proved. I've had this happen a few times and the first time it does information technology's both a) worrying (because it looks like a scam) and b) extremely abrasive because you realise that you're existence denied your coin past Paypal and it looks like nothing more than Paypal creating working capital letter for themselves at your expense.

But, the issue is, that whatever yous sell that is high value, send it using a fully trackable and signed for service. I used http://www.parcel2go.com to source resonable priced shipping for big or high value items. It'southward not worth cutting corners on aircraft.

If in incertitude…………Pull out!

At the moment you retrieve you don't have the money but yous have the bike, as soon as you post you may have neither.
I sold a road bike on fee bay buyer paid through paypal.
He received bike merely then said he hadn't inspected for a week cause he was abroad.
Then he said wasn't every bit described, and he gets total refund from me!! But and this is the proper kick in the teeth, I am supposed to cover the delivery stamp and his return postage.
So of a sudden I am expected to offer a costless returns arrangement similar im CRC or something!

I told him the I would drive down (400) miles and collect in person so I could bank check information technology was all the same in as delivered condition.
He then posted it dorsum at his cost.
I will never mail a bike through pay/pal or ebay again the risk is manner likewise high.
Keep bicycle and refund.

Is both parcelforce guidelines? I'thousand pushed to get a frame sized box through their dragon only that'south almost office, not pickup mind.

Plenty of stw'ers in Newcastle if yous need his slippers weeing in

Of he's up for you dropping off bicycle (even though y'all didn't) I'd be less worried about a scam.

I'grand gonna start thinking that they accept something against me

See, I was only joking when I wrote that. Seems it'south really true, though **** knows why.

To the winky modernistic that deleted my mail but not Boblo'due south – care to explain why? Happy to practise so in private email as long as you reveal your forum user proper name because I'm seriously starting to think you lot have an issue with me and I'd like it to stop.

If y'all're going to exist a modern then at to the lowest degree do so with impartiality or explain why I'k on your hitting list.

Well the bicycle went today. I decided to requite him the benefit of the uncertainty.

It got collected and I gave him a tracking number. And then he started asking lots of questions that he really should accept asked final week. Like when was the suspension final serviced, does it fit 27.5 wheels etc.. He seems really disappointed that it's 26 merely, which to fair, was blatantly obvious.

He's making me nervous. The only reason I felt kind of condom sending it to the northeast is that I used to live in that location and I know enough people that, push button come to shove, I can take someone banging on his front door if needs be. I'd much rather that doesn't happen.

So begins at to the lowest degree 48 hours of stress!

Good luck 🙂

He seems actually disappointed

I don't remember this is going to finish well 🙁

I don't think this is going to end well

Nor me sadly. Should've refunded the coin and sold it elsewhere.

Dispute claim on its mode I reckon.

OP will be visiting him before long I reckon

If I e'er have to trust someone a long fashion away I often "happen to mention" that I have family or friends nearby, which I almost invariably don't. It sounds a bit heavy but I don't try to intimidate and certainly don't make information technology sound that manner.

If I'm asked post anything of any value now I insist on bank transfer only. Yeah the buyer has to trust me and I'm sure I lose potential customers but information technology's simply not worth the risk to me.

I hope this ends upwardly alright for y'all OP.

If I'grand asked post anything of whatsoever value now I insist on bank transfer just. Yep the heir-apparent has to trust me and I'm sure I lose potential customers but information technology's simply not worth the risk to me.

I would never ship banking company transfer to a stranger. This is why I tend to insist on pick up simply and cash on collection. Unfortunately this limits your market just you lot take to weigh upwardly what is all-time for you.

No reason to think its dodgy…he hasn't tried to become a mate to collect it, common scam items are small loftier value items that are like shooting fish in a barrel to sell on without hulking huge boxes around, and he hasn't tried to ship more than needed with a story virtually forwarding it on.

For what its worth, I've never tried to withdraw money from Paypal, one time its in Paypal, I'll send the item and the coin will get respent on other stuff direct from Paypal.

They can exist a fleck draconian, for example holding on to funds if they retrieve the seller is pulling a fast one or the account action is unusual. If you only received £1100 out of the bluish and its unusual for your account, and and then you lot immediately endeavor to withdraw the cash, they may put a hold on the money in example the goods don't turn up.

P.S Proceed a record of the contempo emails about it existence a 26er etc, if the seller is unhappy with the cycle and raises a dispute, its strong evidence he got cold feet before he even received the item.

For anyone thinking drib off/collection is safer, you are losing the proof of delivery! So if the transaction is washed via paypal (I've asked for this as I don't want to drive 60 miles simply to notice the buyer thinks he can commencement haggling, or not turn upward) you need to get the buyer to print and sign a receipt, and ideally a photo of the heir-apparent and detail (last couple of times I've relied on taking a prune from the dashcam in case they try and merits the goods accept not been received)

Expert luck OP.

Why would you use PayPal if you were delivering by paw?

For anyone thinking drop off/collection is safer, you are losing the proof of commitment!

yeah…. I call up that's a well known scam past this point. If collection is in person so it MUST be cash. In which example, it's 100% safe (unless you lot become mugged on the way to/from/during).

The money is in my business relationship now. It feels a little meliorate now that I can run into it and information technology'southward not stuck in limbo somewhere. Now that I know how piece of cake it is for the buyer to claim their money back I won't be ordering a new bike yet.

If I ever have to trust someone a long way away I often "happen to mention" that I accept family or friends nearby,

I don't think he has whatsoever idea I'm from the northeast.

OP will be visiting him shortly I reckon

No I won't be, but I've already briefed some old mates on the situation. If annihilation dodgy happens there will be a black pickup truck full of large, baldy, rednecks knocking on his door within the hour. All nice reasonable lads obviously merely if they turned upward on your driveway you'd probably but mitt over the bike.

Simply of class, all this could exist totally normal and I'll be planning a new bike in a few days. Just need to chill out.

PayPal offer poor protection to sellers. Default policy is to side with the buyer and reverse the payment on whatsoever complaint. Having the money withdrawn doesn't finish them charging back on your bank account as well.

One of a number of reasons I stopped selling on ebay (mostly though reasons of full general hassle and fourth dimension for little reward).

In that location used to be escrow services you could utilise which supposedly offering more than protection for both sides.

Just a quick update…

I've all the same got the coin in my bank. But I've merely came habitation and seen the bike up for sale on still Facebook pages I put it on!

Now I'm not bothered what he does with it, merely earlier I posted information technology he was "in love".

How long do I accept to worry about him starting a PayPal dispute? Can he do this if he isn't fifty-fifty still in possession of the bike? Should I exist alarmed?

Better than off-white chance of him being on Hamsterley Riders on that Facebook …

Take screenshots, email them to an independent so that they tin can exist dated.

Got all the screenshots of Pinkbike and Facebook messages detailing how much he loved the bike and was drastic for me to post it. He went tranquillity as shortly equally the bike left. No acknowledgment or contact whatsoever since it was signed for.

Really surprised to come across information technology up for sale. Paypal is crap for contacting. No piece of cake way to ask them a question or raise whatever concerns.

Glad it seems to take been ok in the end.

Paypal is crap for contacting

Rubbish, I accept phoned them many times and they have always been great. Yous have tried phoning them?

Even PayPal would side with you now he has posted information technology up for sale…Buy the bicycle!!!!!

I had 3 lots of $800 fraudulently taken out of my Paypal account the week earlier Christmas, to cut a long, long story brusque, if there was an alternative to PayPal I'd exist using it….

Are yous using ii factor hallmark on your PayPal account? If non, I would definitely turn that option on. It's the best mode of preventing fraudulent utilise of your business relationship.

Are you a business concern selling bikes or a consumer selling a wheel to another consumer.

If so consumer contract replaced distance selling which undoubtably is irrelevant as PayPal will ride barbarous over any rights you may take had.

Another excuse not to use their crappy expensive service.

FWIW the sooner people start taking legal activity against chancers who recollect they volition be protected behind the unique and what may not at present be legal terms some offshore feign of a company thinks they can stick you with the improve County court Judges are oftentimes far more probable ( though not always) to use their common sense and see through deception.

You might find the chancer doesn't take a pot to piss in but information technology's worth it for the pocket-sized claims cost IMHO.

I had three lots of $800 fraudulently taken out of my Paypal account the week before Christmas, to cutting a long, long story short, if in that location was an alternative to PayPal I'd exist using it….

Interestingly, I had an unauthorised payment made on my Paypal account over the w/finish on some gaming website I've never been to (US$46). Have opened a dispute, so will run across how that goes.
